Daytona Shelby Project

This website is to track my progress and cost for this project.

The Daytona Shebly Project has began. Since nobody wanted to buy my Daytona Shelby with a dead third cylinder for $1300, I am rebuilding it for ME.

The goal is make my Daytona a reliable daily driver, runs mid 14's, and handle decently. It will be something for me to drive while I build up my GLH.

Final budget is about two and a half times what I said I want to spend. Oh well.

June 02, 08

Since the stamped steel valve cover leaked a little, I thought I'd upgrade to casted TBI aluminum one piece gasket valve cover.

Car has NOT let me down yet. The only time the car wouldn't start is when I used a bad chip to burn the calibration on, I should have know better!

March 17

Been driving the car for a month now, nothing broke or fail off yet!
With the exception of few minor things, the car is pretty much done! :)

Gauges holder is done

Oil Pressure, Boost, and Wideband

Feb 10

New swaybar bushings fit, just had to modify the bracket a little.

Most importantly the car runs and I got videos

Jan 26

Everything are in except fluid and intake hoses/airbox

Swaybar bushing wont' fit. Last thing I need is more problems.

Dec 19

Short block and transmission are in.

Dec 02

Rained all day yesterday.

Waiting for transmission parts from the dealer from Colorado. I hope they are not snowed in. I better contact them tomorrow.

Didn't get much done other than cleaning up the pistons since I am waiting for the parts. :(

Don't ever use anchor mount, these didn't last one year.

Nov 25

Cleaned Control Arms.

Painted and installed with new balljoint and poly bushings.

Need to order more tranny parts. :(

Nov 19

I have been busy!

Things I've done today.

Well, control arms are off and I know why the Daytona handled like bus...

Those black stuff used to be the swaybar bushings at the subframe for BOTH side.

P/S fluid + dirty + time = need a lot of elbow grease and simple green to clean.

New steering rack and pump are in. I'll power wash everything in the engine bay when engine is in.

Things I did in the last 3 weeks.

Rear koni and eibach are installed. I also install the poly bushings for the rear suspension.

Front Koni and eibach are prepared and installed.

I also clean the transmission, install a LSD in it, and replace all seals and gaskets.

Before cleaning

After cleaning

Installed the block type LSD into differential, and installed the diff pins saver. I also had bought a new diff pin just in case.

Putting the differential back into the transmission.

Painted the transmssion in black.

Oct 14

Cleaned the transmission and boxed it up, shipped weight is 108.75lbs. Sold it for $325, $120 of profit!

When I was in Fedex, the lady that helped me was probably 5 ft 8 tall, weight about 150lbs. I offered to help her to move the transmission, 108.75lbs, off the scale, she said she got it. It was funny to watch her struggle with the transmission as I was able to tell she won't be able to hold on to it for more than 10 seconds. She got it on the ground ok at the end.

Don't buy archor mount.

Oct 13

Engine and transission is off the car! Just need to clean everything off and install new p/s rack and p/s pump, that's for next week.

Oct 12

Rear Koni shocks are here!

Oct 05

P/S rack and p/S pump are here!

I just order bunch of new parts.See the bottom of the page for cost tracking.

I can not believe it but the head looks brand new! I wonder what oil she used. I guess I'll be taking the head in for cleaning and valve job.

Short block looks good too.

Took the turbo and exhaust manifold off the cylinder head to I can test fit other turbos. I do not like what I see at cylinder number 2. Blown headgasket for a while? Or worst? Time to get the head off, I guess.

Turbo choice, it's either stock TII turbo or Chysler .48 housing match with Ford .60 compressor side. I'll have to check to see the map. More importantly, pros and cons of either turbo.

That's not going to work.

This will work.

Sep 29, 07

Bought a set of Koni front Strut and Eibach springs today. I also moved the car so I can have shade when I work on it. I haven't driven a turbo car in 6 months, I miss boost!!! I need to order lots of power steering stuff soon.

Soooo many turbo options. I have yet to decide which turbo I'm going to use with the 2.5L TI block.

Tracking cost.

It is currently at $$1488.4
Hopefully, I can keep the build cost under $1400, excluding the car, 2.5L engine ($325), Koni front struts, Eibach springs ($200 together). The engine and suspension parts probably costed me $50 easy in Gas. I had to go to Cottonwood for the engine and Prescott for the suspension..
April 04, 08. Of course, I lost count of how much I spent. Probably closer to $3k with tires, custom chips, computer burner, alignment, paint, gauges, wideband etc... :(
